I like the contrast of smooth milkshake with crunchy topping, so I left mine solely for garnish. If you like some texture in your milkshake, you can add some of the crushed candy canes to the blender. You can make your own, or you can start with vanilla ice cream and add some peppermint extract. For some reason, none of the big ice cream brands seem to make it. The recipe starts with peppermint ice cream, but I know that can be hard to find. And peppermint is my second-favorite Christmas flavor (my first favorite is eggnog!). Ice cream is one of my favorite treats, all year round. Once it’s frosted, add the second cake right on top and then frost the top of that one. I stirred the frosting and crunch together. Now, I scooped both cans of frosting into a mixing bowl and then added in almost all of the bag of peppermint crunch (reserving just a bit for garnish). Allow them to finish cooling completely before frosting. When your cakes are done, remove from oven and allow to rest for 10 minutes before inverting them on to a plate. In a second mixing bowl, whisk together your flour, baking soda and salt. Next, beat in your eggs until just combined. In a mixing bowl, beat your butter and brown sugar until nice and fluffy (it takes a few minutes). Pour your chocolate chips into a microwaveable bowl and melt (I stopped to stir about every 30 seconds until it was melted).
